Mariano Rivera Tells Jon Stewart He Prays for Derek Jeter 'to Stay Healthy' Every Night; Thanks God for Career
In a recent interview on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," Christian athlete and future Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera talked about his strong relationship with the New York Yankees and Derek Jeter and how he prays for him daily.
Stewart asked Rivera on his thoughts about Jeter's final season being that he himself retired the season before, to which Rivera offered some words of encouragement for his longtime friend.
"I pray every night for him to stay healthy, so he can enjoy the whole year," Rivera said when asked his thoughts. "The whole thing, and enjoying and make sure that he be there for his time because he deserves it. "
Stewart then asked, "And you pray for that every night?" to which Rivera replied, "Oh yes." Stewart then jokingly added, "And you never throw anything for the Mets like a nice corner outfielder? You got a direct line to God and you're praying for to him every night...lets just let Derek Jeter have another nice year."
Rivera retired last season as the all-time regular, playoff, and all-star saves leader. He was a 13-time all-star, and a five time World Series champion.
Throughout the season as Rivera made his way from ballpark to ballpark, teams were honoring him with gifts to take with him when he retired at the end of the season. He received everything from rocking chairs, broken bats, and plaques.
Rivera symbolizes everything that is great and pure about baseball. He has always played the game with grace and class, and his work ethic is impeccable. He has never been the subject of negative press, he has never had an ill thought about a fellow ballplayer, and he goes out and does his job night after night.
