Manny Pacquiao Next Fight November 2014: Facing Chris Aligeri
Questions about who WBO Welterweight Champion Manny Pacquiao will face in his next bout have been answered. Bob Arum recently announced that an unknown boxer named Chris Aligeri, who currently holds the WBO Light Welterweight title, will fight the Filipino wonder.
Their fight is scheduled to be on November 22, 2014 at the Venetian Casino & Resort, in Macao, China. Arum has been facing criticism on why he chose an unsignificant boxer to battle against one of the biggest names in the boxing world. According to reports, the fight may be only beneficial to Aligeri, and would have not much effect on Pacquiao's career, who fans have hoped would be fighting the WBA/WBC Welterweight Champion Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Star Boxing promoter Joe DeGuardia said, "We have an offer from Bob and we're excited. I'm enthusiastic. It's the kind of fight that can push Chris higher up the ladder. He made a huge step in his last fight by winning the title against Ruslan and this would be another huge jump up that ladder," he told ESPN.
According to sports analysts, the rising champion Aligeri could make more than $1 million against Pacquiao, after making only $15,000 for a January fight and $100,000 for the Provodnikov fight.
With that looking as a closed deal, Steve Kim recently announced that there could be a catch-weight of 144 pounds for Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KO's) and his lighter opponent Algieri (20-0, 8 KO's). Aligeri, being a thin fighter, will unlikely be able to gain a legitimate amount of weight in time for the fight.
However, Arum has already handpicked Aligeri, even when he is questioned with his recent move. Some say there's drama involved with the decision, that a small time boxer can face a big dog in the ring for a Cinderella story bout, which might just sell a lot of tickets.
Arum promotes the Pacquiao-Aligeri fight saying, "I like the storyline with Algieri. Besides being a good fighter, he's a college graduate, a kid who wants to go to medical school to become a doctor in the future. He's articulate, good looking and we'll get a lot of backing in the promotion from the New York media because he's from New York." Arum told ESPN.
According to reports, Aligeri has a Master's degree, but despite his educational success, focuses on boxing for the most part.
Arum remains positive about the situation, he says, "It remains to be seen how we'll do (on pay-per-view) but when you have a nice storyline you can really push it. Would I like if Algieri had more exposure? Absolutely. But it is what it is."
