Manny Pacquiao Next Fight News: Prepares for Chris Algieri Fight, Talks Weight Loss & Division Change
Manny "PacMan" Pacquiao went to San Francisco last Thursday to promote his fight with WBO welterweight challenger Chris Algieri.
He told Yahoo! Sports that if succeeds in beating Algieri, he will probably consider returning to the 135 or 145 pounds platform.
Presently, he is fighting at 147 lbs because that's where all the big names in boxing are. The 147 pound level would also give him an opportunity to fight with Mayweather, if the legendary bout ever gets a date.
However, he said that he is also thinking about dropping some weight, "I could make either weight, 135 or 140, easily," he said, "It would be easy for me. I am at 147 because that's where the action is in terms of the opponent, but it wouldn't be hard."
The Algieri match is supposed to be at 144 lbs per contender, but Freddie Roach (Pacquiao's trainer) said he wishes he could have signed him up at 140 pounds. This way, he could win Algieri's WBO super lightweight belt title and retain his WBO welterweight title.
"Manny hasn't really carried his power up with him to 147, but he is a very big puncher at 140," Roach said, "It's a much better weight for him, to be honest with you. He would hurt guys at 140."
Pacman also said that they are training even harder to match up Algieri's skills. He also talked about his new job as a PBA coach and said that it would not affect his personal fights.
"My training is still intense even with all of that," Pacquiao said, "I have a very good assistant coach who will supervise things for me when I can't be there. There are five assistant coaches and so nothing will be overlooked. We can do it all."
The upcoming bout will take place in in Macau, China on November 22.
