Man Killed for Winter Olympic Ring Fail at Sochi Opening Ceremony? Social Media Rumors Circulate - Are They True? (VIDEO)
Was there a man murdered for the Olympic Ring error at the Sochi Opening Ceremony Friday night?
A rumor has been circulating that is alleging a technical specialist named T. Borris Avdeyev was deemed responsible for the fifth Olympic ring change error Friday night. He was reportedly found lifeless in his Sochi hotel room after being stabbed numerous times. Luckily, the alleged rumor that swept social media over the weekend is 100% false.
The rumor originated from a story found on The Daily Currant website. It is a spoof Internet news site that frequently tricks social media with its counterfeit current events news stories. A few of the online pranks which have originated from The Daily Currant include the story of 39 people passing away as a result of a marijuana overdose, and President Obama unveiling free "Obamastation" gas stations in underprivileged neighborhood areas.
According to the fake report found on The Daily Currant website, five digital snowflakes were reportedly supposed to change into Olympic Rings. The first four functioned correctly but then the fifth snowflake failed to transform its shape.
In addition, the article also reported that the "alleged" body was severely mangled and the fatal injuries were consistent with a fight.
"It's terrible when accidents like this happen. But then again, maybe Mr. Avdeyev should have thought twice before he screwed up the Olympics. Accidents tend to happen to people who betray Russia," said the imaginary police officer in the fictitious report.
According to International Digital Times, the story has already viewed more 16,000 shares on Facebook and Twitter late Friday night.
The 2014 Winter Olympics can be viewed on the NBC network until February 23.
