Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 Latest News Update, Map: ‘Debris Found on Australia Coast Wasn’t From Plane’ Search Could Take Years [VIDEO]

The search for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 is continuing despite all leads coming up short so far. Fifty days have now passed since the huge airliner suddenly disappeared en route to China, and investigators have been left stumped despite widening their investigations along the western Australian coastline.

A previously spotted metal object in the ocean was speculated to be a part of the missing 370 flight, that was carrying 239 passengers when it disappeared. But authorities have said that under closer examination the object is definitely not from the missing aircraft.

Only 10% of the currently scheduled sonar scans beneath the target area of Indian Ocean remains. A 310-square-kilometer search with a home base at 6 miles away from the town of Augusta was initiated last week, but has so far not found any signs of the missing plane.

The U.S. Navy Bluefin 21, which has led the search, is designed to create three-dimensional images of the seabed. It has been operating about 198.8 miles away from Perth, where signals similar to the black box searchers are looking for were last heard. However, officials say that the Bluefin 21 cannot dive deeper than 2.8 miles against the 4-mile depth of the Indian Ocean.

The search had already cost $11.7 million for the U.S. Military alone. But despite the fruitless search so far, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott emphasized that they will not give up, but clarified that they need to perhaps change strategy for the future.

"We are not going to abandon the families of the 239 people who were on that plane by lightly surrendering while there is reasonable hope of finding something," he said Wednesday. "We may well rethink the search, but we will not rest until we have done everything we can to solve this mystery."

Officials admitted that the search operation for MH Flight 370 could take years and is one of the most baffling sea tragedies they have investigated to date.
