'Make Them Visible' Homeless Viral Video Sheds Light on Impoverished People; Would You Notice Your Own Family on the Street? (VIDEO)

A new campaign called Make Them Visible is aiming to change the way people think about the homeless by taking family members and disguising them to see if they recognize each other.

New York City Rescue Mission puts several people face-to-face with their own family members disguised as homeless, and every single time the person just kept walking by. The results of this social experiment are stunning, and even more dramatic for those who took part in the test.

"There's only one person that didn't make it into the film -- because they couldn't handle the fact that they walked by their family," said Jun Diaz, video director of Smuggler production company to Fast Company. "It happened every time."

The footage was shot in the Tribeca and Soho areas of NYC near the mission center with actors and their families. According to The Huffington Post, the actors thought they were taking part of a documentary. What they did not know is that their family had been contacted, and asked to pose as a homeless person to see if they would be recognized.

"We don't look at them. We don't take a second look," said Michelle Tolson, director of public relations for the New York City Rescue Mission to The Huffington Post.

Perhaps the most touching and shocking part of the video is once the family members are let in on the secret.

"The experiment is a powerful reminder that the homeless are people, just like us, with one exception," said Craig Mayes, executive director of New York City Rescue Mission to The Huffington Post. "They are in trouble and in pain. And they are someone's uncle or cousin or wife."
