Madeleine McCann Search Latest Update: Police Search Praia Da Luz Area, Libel Case News, Court Date
The search for Madeleine McCann continues as police recently scoured an area of scrubland near Praia Da Luz, where the toddler went missing almost seven years ago.
Unpleased with unaswered questions and the long drawn-out case, the McCanns criticized the former police officer who led the search, "every time he delays the case, it causes more pain and distress", Kate McCann told the Guardian.
Beyond criticism against law inforcement and investigators, Kate and Gerry McCann are suing Goncalo Amaral for libel after he published a book entitled The Truth and the Lie. The controversial text claims that Madeleine died in an accident which was then covered up by her parents.
The MccCanns are exhausted according to reports pending the cancellation of the libel case against Amaral for the fourth time, "We're exasperated that the hearing has been cancelled once again at Mr. Amaral's request. This is the fourth time this has happened and we've travelled to Portugal. The legal case has been running now for over five years and we want to get justice for Madeleine." Gerry McCann told the press while outside the Court of Lisbon.
The McCanns are clearly upset and angry because Amaral's 2008 book delayed the search for their daughter who was four years old at the time. The book contained suggestions that the McCanns might have hid Madeleine's body after her accidental death and proceeded to fake an abduction.
The family claims that Amaral's work has been detrimental to the investigation of their missing Madeleine, and cost them nearly £1 Million in damages.
The recent search in the small area near Praia Da Luz has reinforced the family's hope that the child may still be alive, because no evidence has been found therein. The people residing there suggested that the child could not have been in the area. A local handyman named Candido Furtado said to Sky News, "I can't understand why they are searching here. On this land they will only find bones from buried horses and donkeys. I have always worked here and I never seen anything suspicious or any disturbed ground."
Meanwhile, the couple will return to Portugal for the next hearing, which has been set for July 8, 2014.
