Madeleine McCann Case Update 2014 Latest: Investigators Search Praia da Luz

The search for Madeleine McCann continues as Scotland Yard reopens the crime scene next week, according to a report published by The Guardian.  Portuguese police sources said that the British investigating team will begin sweeping the area at Praia da Luz, where the young McCann was last seen before her disappearance seven years ago.

Madeleine went missing from their holiday resort apartment on May 3, 2007 while her parents and some family friends were having dinner at a nearby restaurant.  Witnesses testified that a three-year-old was spotted being carried by a man towards the ocean, according to some reports.

Metropolitan police assistant commissioner Mark Rowley said that the initial investigation conducted in Praia da Luz did not produce substantial information to identify the possible whereabouts of McCann.

"We may go through every line of inquiry and all of them draw a blank," The Guardian quoted Rowley's statement.

Furthermore, a source from Policia Judiciara appealed to the public and media to maintain the investigation's sanctity.

"The moment we feel our work and movements are being undermined or restricted by cameras or satellite trucks, we will immediately order the cessation of all field operations until normality has been restored.  While we cannot expect television cameras and journalists to stay away, we ask them to respect our work and our space," the source said. Meanwhile, a documentary titled McCanns and the Conman showing the story of the hired spy assigned to McCann's abduction case will be featured on the UK's Channel 5.  Kevin Halligan was imprisoned for 44 months in 2009 after the authorities proved that he was operating without license, and that he spent $1 million of McCann funds on unrelated activities.

Channel 5's Commissioning Editor for Factual Programmes Emma Westcott has said, "This documentary is the extraordinary story of one man's audacious claims, and how he not only fooled the intelligence community at the highest level, but cynically exploited the nightmare of a missing child and her family," according to Digital Spy.
