If there is one thing that is unique and likable at the same time about Mad Men, it is the presence of symbolism in its episodes.  In last week's The Monolith, the show was faced by a series of inevitable changes - some of which sprung from previous incidents while the others were spontaneous. 

Don Draper was on the edge with his current situation at Sterling Cooper & Partners and his relationship with Megan.

The Monolith, which derives its name from a 2001 space odyssey, signifies evolution and imperceptible change that may be good or bad one way or another.  In Man Men, Roger represents governmental and sexual control on the hippie culture.

The same is true with Don Draper's office where a slight change in the technology was resisted by the creative department.  Don, on the other hand, was confronted with crises at work and survival challenges. 

He then turned to Freddy for advice, but at the end of the day, he is on his own.

The Wall Street Journal explained, "There is a composite understanding of the great mythological figures-and Odysseus exists as a crafty trickster, a lover, a returning husband, a reluctant warrior-a man of many shapes.  Our understanding of the character is prismatic, and depends on the circumstances.  I think that is the way we have to take Don's character as we watch his journey. We'll have a better sense of him at the end.  But in the mean time, it is a joy to watch the character unfold."
