Macbook Pro Retina vs Macbook Air 2014: Comparison of Weight, Specs and Price
With a new Macbook Pro coming to shelves before the holiday season, Apple has been giving steep discounts to their current stock of Macbook Pros with Retina Displays and Macbook Airs. Even more so, they are giving out gift cards to students and teachers wishing to buy a new Mac.
But which among the two laptops is better in the price and spec ranges?
For this comparison, the 13-inch versions of both the Macbook Pro and Air will be used.
When it comes to size, both the Macbook Pro and Air don't differ that much with only a few millimeters in difference. The Macbook Pro, just 1mm thicker than the Air, doesn't have the tapered edges that the Air has. This makes the Macbook Air feel and look thinner than what the measurements suggests.
The Air is also lighter weighing in at 1.35 kg while the Macbook Pro at 1.57 kg.
Even though the two laptops share the same display sizes, the resolution differs between the two. For the Macbook Air, its 13-inch monitor comes with a 1440 x 900 resolution display at 128 ppi (pixels-per-inch). The Macbook Pro on the other hand goes with the 2560 x 1600 Retina Display with a 227 ppi.
Both laptops go with the Intel i5 dual core processor, the Macbook Air with a 1.4GHz processor while the Macbook Pro at 2.4GHz. When it comes to graphics, the Air comes with the Intel HD 5000 while the Pro goes with the Intel Iris graphics card.
Both have a 4GB RAM but the Air can go up to 8GB while the Pro can go up to 16GB of RAM. Storage wise, the Pro goes up to 1TB of internal storage while the Air can only go until 512GB.
The Macbook Pro is more expensive, going at $1300 while the Air goes for $1000.
