Lupita Nyong’o on Cover Photo of Glamour Magazine - Woman of The Year, Shares Thoughts on Fame and Beauty in Interview
Fans of actress Lupita Nyong'o will be excited to learn that she has been put on the cover of Glamour Magazine's annual Woman of The Year issue. Beyond that, in an interview with the 'Star Wars: Episode VII' actress, she talked about how her fame has changed her life.
Nyong'o, who attained fame after a stellar performance in '12 Years a Slave', a performance that awarded her an Oscar, admitted that being famous has its downside.
"I've had somebody say, 'I want you at my wedding, but I don't want you to pull focus, so wear jeans!" noted that actress after being asked about how becoming famous affected her personal life.
"Losing my anonymity is something that's proving to be very challenging. It's good for your soul to walk around unnoticed; there's so much you can't do when everybody knows who you are. And I so miss those little things," the actress continued.
Nyong'o also shared how Oprah Winfrey has a lot to do with her success in the entertainment industry.
"Oprah played a big role in my understanding of what it meant to be female and to really step into your own power. I wouldn't even call her a role model; she was literally a reference point. You have dictionary, you have the Bible, you have Oprah," the actress revealed.
When Nyong'o was asked if she feels the pressure of fitting into society's ideals of beauty, she asserted, "European standards of beauty are something that plague the entire world."
"This is the message: that dark skin is unacceptable. I definitely wasn't hearing this from my immediate family - my mother never said anything to that effect, but the voices from the television are usually much louder than the voices of your parents," Nyong'o replied.
"I come from a loving, supportive family, and my mother taught me that there are more valuable ways to achieve beauty than just through your external features. Beautiful people have many advantages, but so do friendly people....I think beauty is an expression of love. There's room in this world for beauty to be diverse," said the 31-year old actress in the magazine.
Beyond that, IMDb reports that Nyong'o is currently recording for and upcoming film, 'The Jungle Book', as the voice of Rakcha.
