The Most Gruesome Sports Injury in NCAA Tournament History

Louisville guard Kevin Ware badly injured his lower right leg during the Midwest Regional final against Duke on Sunday and has been carried off the court after several minutes.

The game is in Indianapolis and an official tells several reporters that a bone snapped.  Louisville trainers quick covered the leg with a towel and placed Ware on a backboard, then lifted him onto a stretcher.

Teammates huddled around Ware as he left the court to encourage and console him. His teammates were visibly upset seeing the injury, embracing each other and crying. Coach Rick Pitino even had to wipe tears from his eyes on the sidelines.

With 6:33 left in the first half, Duke's Tyler Thornton shot a 3-pointer as Ware closed out on him.  Ware jumped to contest and his leg buckled when he landed.  Thorton made the shot and it make the score 21-20 Louisville with the lead.

As Ware was put on the stretcher some Louisville fans starting chanting his name.

Hashtags started popping up on twitter immediately after with #WinForWare and #PrayersForWare.  They soon began trending on Twitter as fans of all teams expressed their support and concern for the injured player.

"I don't know if in basketball I've ever seen one like that," Jim Nantz of CBS said as medical personnel attended to Ware. Trainers quickly covered his leg with towels because of the graphic nature of the injury.

Tracy Wolfson of CBS reported that the team had confirmed it was a broken leg and that the player had been transported to a hospital.

Nantz' assessment of the injury being the worst he had seen in a basketball game was widely echoed on Twitter by members of the basketball media.

Prayers go out to Ware as he will begin his recovery process.
