‘Look Up’ Spoken Word Video Now Viral, ‘We’re a Generation of Idiots, Smart Phones and Dumb People’ (VIDEO)
The honest spoken word video 'Look Up' has people all over the Internet raving, and has gone viral for the exact same reason it was made; people of this generation just can not seem to get off of their computers and smart phones and "Look up.'
Speaker Gary Turk made the video in hopes to reach the online generation. "'Look Up' is a lesson taught to us through a love story, in a world where we continue to find ways to make it easier for us to connect with one another, but always results in us spending more time alone," the video summary reads.
The clip starts off with the piercing phrase, "I have 422 friends yet I'm lonely, I speak to all of them everyday yet none of them really know me." Sadly enough, many viewers who commented on the video understood exactly what Turk was talking about.
Turk goes on to bring home the point that this generation of people tend to open up computers to socialize but they shut their doors to eye-to-eye human contact. "Be there for your friends and they'll be there to, but no one will be if a group message will do," he advises. He describes how different thing are from when he was a child and children played outside, rode bikes, and played in the park.
Turk points out that even parents now use technology as a way to entertain their children. He recites, "It's not likely you'll become worlds greatest dad if you can't entertain your children without using an iPad."
Communication has vastly changed over the course of the last ten years as text message, social media and online video gaming became more prevalent. Turk bothered by the social consequences that is having on this generation says people even edit themselves on the Internet losing that authenticity of raw contact.
He proclaims, "We're a generation of idiots, smart phones and dumb people."
"So Look up from your phone, shut down the display, take in your surroundings, make the most of your day," the speaker then shows a chance meeting of a love story to demonstrate what "looking up" can mean.
Trying to find an address, a man asks a woman for directions instead of consulting Google Maps, which causes him to meet the love of his life. The video jumps ahead to the future, to old age, when this man reflects on the years he has shared with this woman. The love ends with a reminder that none of that would have been possible without face-to-face interaction.
"Stop watching this video," he concludes, "and live life the real way."
According to Pew, as of September 2013 71% of online adults use Facebook. The growing use of smartphones has made social networking just a finger tap away. Pew stated in 2013 that 40% of cell phone owners use a social networking site on their phone, and 28% do so on a typical day and that number continues to grow.
