Labor Day 2014 Weekend Travel News, Delays: Highest Number Expected to Travel During Holiday Weekend, Delays Likely

An estimation made by AAA Texas says that over 2.5 million people from the region will either travel by road or take flights to spend the Labor Day 2014 holiday with their friends and family. On the other hand, Arizona transportation officials have warned that motorists taking Interstate 15 in Arizona's northwest corner during the Labor Day weekend are likely to experience traffic delays.

A statement issued by the auto club in Texas said that they expect the highest number of Texans traveling for Labor Day since 2008. According to the club, there is likely to be an increase of 1.9 percent from last year, reports AP.

AAA Texas estimates that 2.1 percent of people who would be traveling between Thursday and Monday will be doing so by road. The club attributes the rise in travelling for the Labor Day to labor market improvements, optimistic consumer expectations for disposable income, in addition to augmented housing values for the increased travel.

In fact, spending by consumers has exceeded income growth, revealing that an increased number of people are prepared to assume liabilities to fund their summer's-end holidays.

Another AP report from Phoenix says that the Arizona Department of Transportation has said that on previous holiday travel weekends there have been delays of up to two hours on the section of I-15 in the Virgin River Gorge.

The ravine is located in the corner of Arizona between Utah and Nevada.

According to the department, construction crews will not be working in the area throughout the holiday weekend. However, it said I-15 narrows to one lane in every direction near a bridge construction project, roughly 20 miles south of St. George, Utah.

The project includes replacing the bridge's superstructure as well as widening the highway through the gorge.
