Kim Soo-Hyun News: 'My Love From the Star' Actor Donates Money for Sewol Ferry Disaster
In a noble gesture, Kim Soo-Hyun, one of South Korea's top actors at the moment, has donated 300 million Won ($290,637) to Danwon High School in Ansan. As many as 250 students and teaches of the school were killed in the Sewol ferry disaster on April 16 that left 302 people dead or missing.
On April 24, Keyeast, the management company of the 26-year-old actor announced his decision to donate the money.
A statement released by Keyast said that the actor "has been looking for the ways to help and decided to donate directly to the students and the victim's families," adding that he hopes the money would be used for treating the injured students and the families of the victims.
Kim Soo-hyun is a hugely popular actor who features in Korean television soaps "My Love from the Star" and "Dream High."
In fact, several Korean celebrities, including actors and entertainers, have joined hands to help out the families affected by one of the worst disasters the country has witnessed in recent times. Others who donated for the cause include Song Seung-heon, Cha Seung-won, Joo Sang-wook, Jung Il-woo, Oh Yeon-seo and Park Shin-hye.
A member of the admired boy band "Super Junior," Kyuhyun has made contributions worth 25 million won ($24,215).
The school also witnessed another tragedy in the aftermath of the ferry disaster, when its 52-year-old vice-principal Kang Min-kyu, who was rescued from the capsized ship, committed suicide two days after the incident. In a note, Min-kyu held himself responsible for organizing the school trip that the students were on when the incident took place.
Last month, Danwon High School sent 325 students on a field trip to Jeju Island. Unfortunately, most of the students died or are missing since the MV Sewol, the ferry they were travelling by, capsized off the south coast of South Korea on April 16. Only 75 students survived.
South Korea's Prime Minister Chung Hong-Won resigned on Sunday over the sinking of the ferry, amid huge public anger over what is seen as a bungled response to the tragedy.
