Killzone Shadow Fall Multiplayer Not True 1080p HD as Indicated, But Graphics Impress Despite Lower Resolution

Killzone: Shadow Fall's multiplayer does not run at true 1080p or 60 fps on the PlayStation 4, according to new reports this week.

The single player mode runs at 1080 or 1920x1080p, while multiplayer is at 960x1080p with 50 fps, according to Digital Foundry. This goes against previous claims made by Sony, and while the number are close, it is a bit deceiving.

"Shadow Fall uses a horizontal interlace, with every other column of pixels generated using a temporal upscale - in effect, information from previously rendered frames is used to plug the gaps," the report explained in their examination. "The fact that few have actually noticed that any upscale at all is in place speaks to its quality, and we can almost certainly assume that this effect is not cheap from a computational perspective. However, at the same time it also confirms that a massive reduction in fill-rate isn't a guaranteed dead cert for hitting 60fps."

However, the game is being heralded for its graphics, so whatever maneuvers Guerilla Games is using to bump the graphics without it being in true HD, it seems to be working.

Beginning today, Killzone: Shadow Fall's multiplayer is is going to be free for a one week trial period.

Guerrilla Games made the announcement Friday, and it occurs right before the launch of the first map pack on March 4. On March 3 at 8 p.m. ET, owners of the PS4 can download Shadow Fall from the PlayStation Store.

"To celebrate the imminent release of our first Free Map DLC on March 4th, we are making the acclaimed KILLZONE SHADOW FALL multiplayer available for FREE to all Playstation® 4 players for a week, starting 3rd of March 5PM PST. Best of all, you will not require PS PLUS to play the Free Access client this week!" wrote Killzone on their blog.

Important to note is that the single player version will not be on trial unless the gamer already owns the game.

"For this free multiplayer access week, we are prepping special Warzones for you to play the just the new maps, and compete on global leaderboards for Capture and Team Deathmatch game modes. All clans, including trial players, will be eligible for prizes in the Clan Community Challenge," wrote Killzone on their blog. "There will be Warzones for those that enjoy the up close and personal touch of smaller skirmishes as well as those of you who want the epic scale of 24 player games. Additionally, our top players will be streaming Clan Battles; you can find the link to the streams in-game."

Killzone is currently a PlayStation exclusive.
