At the Staples Center stop of her Los Angeles tour on Wednesday, Kelly Clarkson, age 33, surprised fans and family alike with her unexpected announcement that she and her husband Brandon Blackstock were expecting their second child.

Clarkson, who was the first winner of American Idol in 2002, spilled the beans when she found she couldn't get through introducing her hit single Piece By Piece without tearing up.

She stopped mid-introduction, struggling to hold back tears, and explained why:

"I was not planning on announcing this, but ... I'm totally pregnant. I'm having a really hard time [introducing this song],"

She said this particular song brought up these emotions because it is a dedication to her own father as well as an offering to her husband for being a good father.

While wiping away tears, Clarkson carried on in a joking manner:

"I'm gonna nail the s- out of this song. That was not how I wanted to announce that ... I hate this song right now,"

She further jibed: "My makeup artist is backstage hating me right now. I just don't want you to think I'm on pills or drunk."

Clarkson sang the song emotionally, then said, "I'd like to apologize to my husband. That was not planned. I just didn't want you to think I was crazy or something. Honestly, I'm just so hormonal today. ... I haven't vomited yet. That is a freakin' win, y'all."

Social media has erupted in well wishes for "The Original American Idol":

"So... @kellyclarkson is pregnant!!! Congrats and much love Kelly!"

Clarkson and Blackstock are already proud parents to a 14-month old daughter, River Rose. Blackstock also has 2 children from a previous marriage.

After Clarkson wrapped up her hit Breakaway, she again made light of her emotional state:

"This is going to be a fun show emotionally. You know what's not easy to do when you're crying and choking up? Singing."

Before covering Demi Lovato's Cool for the Summer, she admitted:

"I'm so nervous to talk to my husband. We haven't even told our [extended] family!"
