'Jungle Cruise' News: Dwayne Johnson Confirmed for Disney's Upcoming 'Jungle Cruise' Film

Disneyland's famed Jungle Cruise ride is finally coming to the big screen, and Dwayne Johnson is slated to star in the action-adventure movie.

Efforts to bring the theme park's beloved ride to screen have been on-going since 2004 when Pirates of the Caribbean launched the idea of bringing popular theme park rides to the cinema.

The most recent development attempt on Jungle Cruise was in early 2011, and it was meant to be a starring vehicle to bring Tom Hanks and Tim Allen back together as co-stars. Roger S. H. Schulman was to pen that incarnation.

This incarnation of the idea has John Requa and Glenn Fintray scripting. They are best known for penningFocus, starring Will Smith. The duo has not, however, been tapped to direct the predicted blockbuster. Davis Entertainment's John Davis and John Fox will produce.

One of Disneyland's original rides, Jungle Cruise offers customers a retro adventure-style ride through African settings.

Visitors are sent through a range of African settings like the Nile River where they come face to face with rhinos, hippos and head-hunters.

They are even 'terrorised' by Amazonian piranhas.

The movie will stick to the theme park rides' original time period. The ride itself is a tribute to 1950s adventure movies like the Bogart-Hepburn filmAfrican Queen.

Johnson is excited to jump on board: "[Disney production president] Sean Bailey and Disney have been awesome partners and now the fun part begins ... We're starting to put in the work with Requa and Ficarra and our creative team. Fired up about this one. Here we go."

Johnson, who is represented by WME, The Garcia Companies and Gang Tyre, is already very busy with shooting New Lines' Central Intelligence.

He will also star in the company's video gave adaptation Rampage. Another project he's slated to be involved in is Baywatch with Zach Efron in early 2016.
