Jordan Speith Youngest Player to Win in 82 Years; Goes to Open Championship in Scottland
Jordan Speith made golf history yesterday when he became the youngest player in 82 long years to with a PGA Tour Event. His competitor, Ralph Guldahl, won the Santa Monica Open in 1931 at age 19, as well.
Speith, native from Dallas, Texas, beat out David Hearn and Zach Johnson in the playoff on Sunday to win the John Deere Classic, earning him a spot at next's week Open Championship in Scottland. With the win, he took home 138,000 dollars.
"I didn't think it would happen this early. I had a plan. I guess the plan got exceeded."Just got so lucky. That's what it is. But right now I'm extremely pleased, and a little worried about only having short sleeves going to Scotland," Speith said.
The humble youngster chalks his fortune up to luck, but many have been saying this young buck is one to keep an eye on.
The shot on 18 was the luckiest shot I ever hit in my life," Spieth said. "The fact that it bounced right and hit the pin and dropped down to the cup, it's just extremely fortunate."
Speith will come up against some of the greatest in the sport next week, and many were absent from the challenge at the John Deere Classic. Given his lack of experience, he's not expected to perform well against the pros, but Speith could definitely surprise us.
In the Ope Championship, Speith will face off against defending champ, Ernie Els, who is favored to win. He will also see Scott Brown again, who beat him in the Puerto Rico Open earlier this year.
