Joni Eareckson Tada's 'Alone Yet Not Alone' Performance at Movieguide Awards 2014; Night Includes Roma Downey and Corbin Bernsen (VIDEO)
Joni Eareckson Tada attended the 22nd Annual Movieguide Awards on Friday evening, which is an event that celebrates faith based entertainment found in television, movies and music. She attended the event to sing the title song from the "Alone Yet Not Alone" movie.
"I think we are at a point in our country where people are becoming weary, they're becoming tired of media messages, and movies that degrade the human spirit, that defame the human heart, that weigh people down, that reinforce hopelessness and despair, people are looking for a change from that," said Tada to Christian Post describing the need for faith based programs in modern day society. "I think that the popularity of the song and its Oscar nomination has underscored that people are looking for a change."
The host of the Christian television program, "Joni and Friends," also described feeling like a fish out of water when she attended the red carpet on Friday.
"I'm a Christian disability advocate. I take wheelchairs around the world to disabled children. We run retreats for special needs families in developing nations, so this is not my world. It's wonderful, but I'm not a professionally trained entertainer," said Tada to Christian Post.
Former "Touched by an Angel" actress and "The Bible" series co-creator, Roma Downey, won the Grace Award in television for best actress in her role of Jesus' earthly mother Mary in "The Bible" series at the Movieguide event.
"I just find it so encouraging that all of the things that we hold near and dear are given a moment in the spotlight where the community can come together and celebrate faith, family values, all the things that are important but don't necessarily get the red carpet treatment," said Downey to Christian Post.
Actor Corbin Bernsen revealed he was thankful for the opportunity to honor quality entertainment with other people in the entertainment community.
"I like film. I like good story. On one level, if someone wants to dig deeper into my life and what guides me and where Christ has a role in my life, they can be exposed to that," said Bernsen to Christian Post. "I don't think all stories have to just be 'come to Jesus' movies to celebrate Christ. I think good movies are movies that Christ would say, 'That's a good movie.' I think you can do that. You might not have to mention God, faith, Jesus in the movie, but you would probably have to mention the word 'love.'" He paused and added the words, "passion" and "understanding."
The event will air on Reelz TV on March 1 at 2 p.m. and will re-air on March 2 at 2 p.m.
