Jodi Arias Trial Update, Latest News: Court Rules That Media is Allowed to Broadcast The Trial
Three Judges from the Arizona Court of Appeals ruled in favor of media outlets, allowing them to broadcast the Jodi Arias trial. The ruling was made against Judge Sherry Stephens' decision to keep the case behind closed doors.
However, the panel overturned The Maricopa County Superior Court Judge's decision and granted a stay to the media.
Initially, Arias' case was not broadcasted live, as Judge Sherry Stephens did not want a media spectacle over the case. Stephens held one secret hearing after another and prevented the broadcast of footage from the sentencing retrial until after a verdict was reached.
Last Thursday, Oct. 30. Stephens kicked the media out before a witness from Arias was called, prompting several media outlets to go directly to the Arizona Court of Appeals, saying that kicking them out of the case would violate the U.S. and Arizona Constitutions and Rules of Criminal Procedure.
On Friday, Oct. 31, David Bodney, lawyer for the media coalition, further stressed that "It's the public's right to a fair trial."
Meanwhile, Arias' lawyer, Kirk Nurmi argued that daily broadcasts of the trial would lead to defense witnesses backing out for fear of being threatened or harassed. He deemed the media frenzy over the case as "unconstitutional."
Jody Arias' case, which was wrapped around a series of scandals and "perversions," has been amplified into one huge spectacle, broadcasted live for people around the world.
Arias was imprisoned last year for the alleged murder of her former boyfriend, Travis Alexander in his suburban Phoenix, Mesa home back in June 2008. Alexander faced a gruesome death, as he was stabbed 30 times, his throat was slit so deeply that he was almost decapitated and he also was shot in the forehead. His body was left in a shower where friends found him about five days later.
Prosecutors claim that Arias attacked Alexander because she was jealous that he was leaving her for another woman. The defense, on the other hand, says that Arias did that out of self defense.
