Jen Welter News: First Female NFL Coach Criticized for Accepting Mayweather’s Fight Night Invite
As elusive as Floyd Mayweather Jr. is in the boxing ring with his defensive genius, one thing he can't seem to escape is his history of domestic abuse against women. And even when he tries take a positive step toward trying to right that wrong, the criticisms keep on coming.
Such was the case when it was reported and later confirmed that he sent out an invite to Jen Welter - the NFL's first female coach - to attend his September fight against Andre Berto. Social media has voiced their sentiment that Welter accepting the invite is an endorsement for a fighter who hits women.
Mayweather is also reportedly considering including the Arizona Cardinals inside linebackers training camp intern coach as part of his entourage going into the ring on Sept. 8. Welter has accepted the invitation to attend the fight and has been quoted as calling it "an honor."
"So would you prefer I prejudge from a distance," Welter wrote on Twitter. "I consider the invitation from @FloydMayweather a positive step."
Even after serving a short jail sentence for pleading guilty to misdemeanor battery in an incident with his ex-girlfriend Josie Harris, the undefeated fighter has never publicly apologized for hitting Harris and denies the incident ever occurred, as noted by yahoo Sports.
"I never prejudge my players, which gave me an opportunity to reach them," Welter tweeted. "Maybe that's why Floyd extended his glove," the coach for a league that also has a history of domestic abuse against women added.
As noted by the Yahoo Sports report, Welter has denied that he is supportive of the boxers domestic violence issues, and expressed that she sees the invite as an opportunity to take the issue to a larger platform.
Mayweather is set to face Berto at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Should he come out victorious yet again, he will tie the undefeated record of boxing legend Rocky Marciano who went 49-0.
