iPod Latest News, Rumors: Is Apple Planning to Pull the Plug on the iPod for Good?

During it's recently concluded Worldwide Developers' Conference (WWDC) 2015 at San Francisco, Apple Inc. was seen shuffling its website around and has eventually taken away the iPod tab, which has remained a permanent fixture at the top of the website for more than 13 years making Tech Radar wonder whether this move by Apple suggests that it is killing the favorite music device for good.

According to many iPod fans, this could be possible, since Apple has not released a new version of the iPod since 2012. In fact, the traditional wheel-based pod, which was the original iPod, was officially killed by the Cupertino-based tech titan in 2014. According to the report, while the sales chart depicts the declining sales of the iPod since the popularity of the smartphones, the company has actually stopped reporting iPod sales since the first quarter of 2015.

While there are rumors that suggest that Apple may come out with a new generation iPod, dubbed by many as the iPod 6G, sometime this year, but it has not happened so far. It has remained a mere speculation.

While Apple has still retained the iPod page on its official website, it placed in an obscure position beneath the new Apple Music tap - the latest music streaming service introduced by the company on Monday.

Since Apple released the first iPod in 2001, it became instantly popular taking the company on the path of stardom. At the same time, the launch of the original iPod changed the tech scenario forever alongside the iPhone, which is considered to be among the most vital tech innovations of the 21st century.

Unfortunately, the iPhone, which came after the iPod, has proved to be the bane for the music device, as the smartphone not only featured the entire music player, but offered much more. Frankly speaking, the only iPod that could have endured the assault of the iPhone is perhaps the iPod Classic - only because of the users' nostalgia associated with it.

Although it is difficult to envisage Apple without an iPod in its line, since there have been no new versions of the device in almost three years, it is unlikely that the Cupertino tech titan will come out with one - at least in the near future. Moreover, even if the rumors come true and iPod gets an update sometime this year, it is unlikely that the device, which revolutionized tech and music, will not be able to regain its old glory.
