iPhone 6 Plus Release Date News: Apple Makes $10 Million on Weekend Sales; Larger Screen iPhone 6 Plus Favored Over iPhone 6
It's barely been a week since the release of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, and Apple, with its official distributors, have already earned $10 million worth of pre-orders and actual purchases.
Even though analysts did not detail specific individual sales data for both smartphones, Apple CEO Tim Cook admitted that the public's response exceeded their expectations.
In a statement, Apple said that customers have pre-ordered more than four million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus devices prior to the big sale last Friday. This toppled the company's record of selling 2 million devices in a 24-hour turnaround two years ago for iPhone 5. This makes iPhone 6 the highest selling Apple device in the past 38 years.
According to CNET, the Cupertino tech giant is also planning to mass produce 70 to 80 million units of iPhone 6 Plus by December 30. This is roughly 30 to 40 percent increase of the total production made for iPhone 5s and 5c.
By the dawn of iPhone 6 sale last Friday, thousands of buyers lined up on official retail stores and distributors, while Apple's website encountered unanticipated heavy traffic two hours after the company announced its availability for pre-sale. Prices for the new iPhone are pegged at $199 for the 16GB version, and up to $499 for the wider screen128GB variant- with exclusive deals from Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile.
The iPhone 6 Plus innovation is the first from Apple to adhere to the current market trend of bigger and larger smartphones. International Data Corporation (IDC), an independent research firm, accounted that 20 percent of the total smartphone population shipped in China last year are at least 5.5 inches in size.
Apple's weekend sale also proved that iPhone 6 Plus is more favored by spectators.
"The iPhone 6 Plus demand is very strong. They're basically sold out everywhere we checked," said Maynard Um, a senior research analyst for Wells Fargo, "But the iPhone 6 didn't look to be fully sold out. That's hard to tell if it's because Apple has a lot of supply out there, or it's because there's less demand for it compared to the iPhone 6 Plus."
More iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will be made available to 20 other countries starting September, 26.
