iPad 5: Apple's Newest Product Thinner, Lighter & Faster
iPad 5 is expecting a facelift of sorts when Apple releases its newest iPad.
The new iPad might actually start looking more like its younger brother, the iPad Mini. While the iPad Mini was lacking in display quality especially, the design was catching on. So much so that the mini will most likely influence the new iPad 5 on design.
The iPad 5 is going to be reportedly 25-33% lighter than the last versions iPad 4. Specifically, the 2,048x1,536 pixel-density Retina display (same pixel density as the iPad 4) will have thinner glass -- achieved by using new touch sensor technology.
NPD DisplaySearch told CNET in April that "part of the thinner/lighter design will be reducing the size of the LED backlight, partly by making the display more efficient and partly by using more efficient LEDs." DisplaySearch also cited the likely shift to a "a film-based touch sensor."
The iPad 3 & 4 became more bulky in the back then the iPad 2 because of the new retina display features that included a bigger backlight assembly. This is one of the main things they will be working on shrinking in size.
Both iPad 5 and the iPad Mini 2 are supposed to have a release date set by this summer, with many thinking they will be available in September or October.
The iPad Mini 2 will be getting a much needed software update with a much higher res display and better features that were left off of the first generation iPad Mini.
