‘Into the Woods’ Film Release Date: Broadway Musical-Based Movie Set to Premiere on Christmas Day 2014
Walt Disney Pictures has announced that 'Into the Wood', an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's Tony Award-winning Broadway musical of the same name, will premiere on the Christmas Day this year - Dec. 25, 2014.
In fact, Stephen Sondheim's play is based on a few fairy tales by Brothers Grimm, including 'Little Red Riding Hood', 'Cinderella', 'Rapunzel' and 'Jack and the Beanstalk'.
The movie 'Into the Woods' is directed by Rob Marshall and follows the journey of a baker and his wife, who desire to have a child. The couple learn that they have been cursed by a witch, and in order to annul that curse they will have to go into the woods seeking certain things they were told they must get. Once inside the woods, the couple encounters as well as interacts with Little Red Riding Hood, Jack, Rapunzel, Cinderella and other fairy tale characters.
While James Corden portrays the baker, Emily Blunt plays the role of his wife and Simon Russell Beale portrays the baker's father. Meryl Streep is cast as the Witch, Lilla Crawford as Little Red Riding Hood, Anna Kendrick as Cinderella, Chris Pine as Cinderella's prince, Christine Baranski as Cinderella's stepmother, Lucy Punch as Cinderella's stepsister (Lucinda), Tammy Blanchard as Cinderella's other stepsister (Florinda), Daniel Huttlestone as Jack, Johnny Depp as the Wolf, Tracy Ullman as Jack's mother, Mackenzie Mauzy as Rapunzel, Billy Magnussen as Rapunzel's prince, Richard Glover as the steward, Frances de la Tour as the Giant's wife, Joanna Riding as Cinderella's mother, and Annette Crosby as Little Red Riding Hood's grandmother.
'Into the Woods' is an unusual Disney movie, as it a musical - basically an all-singing film production. The movie retains Sondheim's music and lyrics for the Broadway musical along, and has two additional songs. One of the new songs is titled "Rainbows," while the other is something which he wrote especially for Streep's character in the movie. However, the movie will not follow the play entirely. What's different, is that Rapunzel will not die in the film, and the prince will not get involved with the baker's wife.
