Immigration Reform News 2014: Illegal and Temporary Residents Granted Documents
Colorado has begun issuing identification cards and drivers licenses to the immigrants whatever their legal statuses might be. The move marked a dramatic change in the state of Colorado as it has recently passed strict laws on the immigration enforcement.
One of the offices in Denver that was dedicated to issuing the documents had a festive look and mood as the Department of Revenue's Barbara Brohl congratulated the applicants as they got their identity cards approved. After issuing of their temporary new licenses, they were told that their permanent cards were going to be mailed soon.
These identity cards issued are the proof of legitimacy to the residency of Colorado for immigrants. About 9500 people are set to receive their cards over the course of the next 3 months. It's important to note, that those with temporary legal status and those as illegal immigrants both qualify for the ID cards. The website used to set up appointments for immigrants had even crashed at one point, unable to handle the traffic. Illinois and Nevada have also started issuing documents to immigrants.
Even though, according to law, all drivers need to have insurance, the new law does not guarantee immigrants their insurance. Those in need of appointments have to present documents of their utility bills that prove that they have been residents of Colorado for the last two years.
A temporary work program for these young immigrants without documents is expected to begin for applications in August. The new plan is estimated to cost around $500 million.
