Ice Bucket Challenge Death: Tragic Accident Leads to Loss of Teenager
Cameron Lancaster, a Scottish teenager is believed to be the first victim of an Ice Bucket Challenge gone terribly wrong. He allegedly jumped off a cliff into a stagnant quarry filled with water, in response to someone else's Ice Bucket Challenge nomination, resulting in his death.
Although the challenge usually involves people dumping a bucket of ice cold water onto their heads, there have been news reports of local youths "tomb-stoning" the quarry in the name of taking the Ice Bucket Challenge.
The Ice Bucket Challenge was a campaign that was created to raise awareness for ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) - a kind of motor neuron disease - and involves the participants spilling a bucket of ice-cold water on their heads and donating to the ALS foundation, which raises money for research into the disease.
The participant then nominates three other people who have 24 hours to respond to the challenge. This campaign has since gone viral all over the internet, and many popular figures including Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Jimmy Fallon etc. have taken up the challenge. As a result, the ALS foundation has raised around $30 million for research.
The Lancaster family is still coping with the loss of their teenage son, and has requested some privacy from reporters waiting to ask them questions, "Cameron died in a tragic accident. His death is such a great loss. During his short life, he touched so many people with his friendliness, kindness and thoughtful generosity of spirit. He will be hugely missed by his family and friends," they said in a statement.
