Ian Somerhalder Leaving Vampire Diaries? Cast Shake-Up? Season 6 New Cast to Be Introduced

In the last episode of "The Vampire Diaries' Season 5, the death of Damon (Ian Somerhalder's character), had fans wondering whether the actor will be back on the show. Executive producer Julie Plec has recently confirmed that he, along with Bonnie (Kat Graham), the other character who appeared to die, will be back in some capacity in Season 6.

"The Vampire Diaries' ended its fifth season with its most shocking finale yet, and now, clues in the form of producer teases and three exciting new characters have come up to update fans on what's going to happen after the metaphorical big bang that destroyed the Other Side.

"The way we look at it, season six is beautiful and an organic reset," said Plec to The Hollywood Reporter, "The theme of the season is everybody gets to start over. That's what we're going to do. We're trying to take the show away from the massive genre extravaganza where each season we try to top each other with the bigger, bad, more exciting mythologies and boil it back down to the beginning."

The season finale showed the destruction of Mystic Falls as a supernatural hotbed, and it has been confirmed that a percentage of the show's leads will not be supernatural anymore in the upcoming season.

Moreover, three new characters will be joining the show. Gabrielle Walsh will be joining the show as Sarah, a woman "who comes to Mystic Falls with spunk, street smarts and a shady agenda". With her is Ivy, (Emily Chang), the girl next door with the unexpected wild side, and Tripp (Colin Ferguson), a community militia leader who Plec says will come to town and go toe to toe with Sheriff Forbes.

"The Vampire Diaries' Season 6 will air on Oct. 2 at 8/7 on The CW.
