The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Was a Box Office Hit Over the Holiday Weekend

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire raked in $110 million over the holiday weekend to overthrow the longstanding record of $82 million set by Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The movie, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson, is a political thriller set in a dystopian future North American where "tributes" are forced to fight to the death every year in order to keep the population under control. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is the second in the trilogy and has so far pulled in over $573 million worldwide.

The only other movie that was in contention to break records this Thanksgiving season was Disney's Frozen, a story about a princess who has to rescue the kingdom from her sister's winter spell. The movie had a $93 million 5 day debut haul, which crushed the record set by Toy Story 2 back in 1999 of $80 million.

Disney went back on their word that the film Tangled would be the last Disney Princess film with Frozen. Tangled grossed around $600 million worldwide and Frozen is looking to follow in its footsteps.

It looks like The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is on track surpass the original Hunger Games movie's domestic total of $408 million. If it continues to sell like it is right now, the film could easily top $450 million domestically before it is pulled from theaters.
