Netflix series "House of Cards" gets 9 Emmy Nods, making History; Kevin Spacey's jubilant response
It's Emmy time, and for the first time in History, the popular TV/Movie subscriber, Netflix, is snagging nominations, making the big 4 sweat in their major broadcasting network pants.
"It certainly is a marker of the new era. ... It will send shock waves through the industry," said Tim Brooks, a TV historian and former network executive.
This is the first time that something outside of a cable TV show has landed a nomination in a major category, marking the start of a new era in television. Netflix has likely made a way for Amazon Prime and Hulu to break into the competition, along side HBO shows, making it harder and harder for regular cable TV shows to compete.
Kevin Spacey, who plays the lead, couldn't be more thrilled with the shows success. Spacey said, "The pressure we feel about doing a great season two is pressure we've applied to ourselves," said the actor. "We have a very high bar and we're having a really fun time putting together season two."
Netflix received 12 Emmy nominations in total, 9 for "House of Cards' and 3 for "Arrested Development". With the nods to the Netflix shows, the Emmy's are likely trying to pull in a younger crowd to help spur on the declining popularity of the awards show.
"The fact that there's been so much talk about whether the series would break through, would the Academy be able to recognize a series being discovered in such a new way, the fact that we not only did that but that we got nine nominations is an incredible acknowledgement of the work we've done," said Kevin Spacey
"House of Cards" is up for outstanding drama series, outstanding lead actor in a drama, outstanding lead actress in a drama, and best director.
