Who will be the Home Run Derby 2013 winner?
Going into tonight's festivities Orioles phenom Chris Davis leads the MLB in homers. The surprise slugger is the favorite for tonight's game. But Davis has his work cut out for him.
Out of the eight hitters in tonight's lineup, two are previous Home Run Derby champions [Robinson Cano, Prince Fielder]. Four others [Bryce Harper, Pedro Alvarez, Michael Cuddyer, Yoenis Cespedes] are making their first homerun contest appearance.
The Mets' David Wright is not a stranger to the Derby and could have the upper hand swinging for his home team crowd.
1. Chris Davis, Orioles - 2013 HR: 37
- Davis hit number 37 tying the American League record with Mr. October, Reggie Jackson for most homers before the All-Star Game. He's the PED-free champion of baseball. Let's hope he stays that way.
2. Bryce Harper, Nationals 2013 HR: 16
- Though Harper hits for contact and power, he's proven he can launch the long ball with the best of them. Bursitis in his left knee forced Harper to miss all of June. Will we see old form from Harper in July? Can't hurt that his dad's pitching to him.
4. David Wright, Mets - 2013 HR: 13
- Wright may have the home field advantage but he's tied with Harper for fewest home runs going into the Derby. However, Wright did come one home run short of winning the Derby in 2006 at PNC Park. Can the Mets hero relive glory days?
5. Robinson Cano, Yankees - 2013 HR: 21
- Sure to draw some boos from Mets fans, Cano shouldn't dissapoint. He's already won one Home Run Derby. Could he repeat? Watch for Davis, Fielder and Cano in the later rounds. Those boys can hit.
6. Prince Fielder, Tigers - 2013 HR: 16
-Speaking of royalty, Prince Fielder may have had a long ball slump after the move to Tiger Stadium at Comerica Park. Less to do with power, more to do with the hitter-friendly dimension of Brewers' Miller Park. Can Fielder win another Derby? Or is Davis really the new kid in town?
7. Pedro Alvarez, Pirates - 2013 HR: 24
- Avalrez is 5th in the MLB for homers and second in the National League. Though he is technically replacing Rockies' Carlos Gonzalez, his numbers should have earned him a spot for the get-go.
8. Yoenis Cespedes, A's - 2013 Home Run: 16
- Cespedes may be having an awful regular season this year but still got the invitation to participate in this year's tournament. Remember, you don't have to be an All-Star to compete in the derby.
