Hobbit 2 The Desolation of Smaug Release Date Review: Ticket Sales on Opening Day Soar Despite Mediocre Reviews [Preview Trailer]
The brand new Hobbit movie called The Hobbit 2: The Desolation of Smaug was released as a midnight showing in many theaters across the US today and ticket sales were through the roof. But does the content of the movie live up to the hype? So far critics are saying, "No, it doesn't."
Critics and viewers alike were skeptical of last year's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first film of the new Peter Jackson directed Hobbit Trilogy. The film was adapted from a small children's book written by Tolkien after he wrote The Lord of the Rings, but Jackson's film was anything but childlike. It had massive CGI reimaginings and extra stories galore, but audiences and critics still gave Jackson the benefit of the doubt and hoped that he could turn around the series with The Hobbit 2: The Desolation of Smaug.
Christopher Orr from The Atlantic wrote, "At some point this level of constant reinvention threatens to become not only self-reinforcing, but self-consuming. Where does Jackson go after he completes his expansive re-telling of The Hobbit? Will he reissue The Lord of the Rings trilogy with new material added to reflect the canonical changes he's made here? Will he adapt The Silmarillion? Or will he retreat from view to tinker with his High Frame Rate toys? Whatever his decision, Jackson has by now laid to rest any lingering doubt that he is, indeed, the new George Lucas. Congratulations."
