Hillsong Conference 2014 Day 2 Recap: 'Church Talk' Segment Stirs Emotions as Brian Houston Openly Discusses Father's Pedophilia [PHOTOS]
BREATHEcast was in attendance during the morning session of the Hillsong conference in Madison Square Garden's theater Friday and perhaps the most emotional part of the three day event is when senior pastor Brian Houston opened up about what he calls "the worse day of his life," confronting his father on pedophilia charges.
Session two of day two at the Hillsong conference opened up with an impressive skit about the Apostle's Creed and then segued into Hillsong United performing their latest single "This I Believe (The Creed)."
After worship, Pastor Houston introduced "Let's Talk Church," a segment which was set up as a talk show. The panel consisted of Houston his son Joel, Judah Smith, and Chris Hodges. On stage an audience was set up comprising of ?Chris Durso, Laura Lentz, Christine Caine and others.
Houston started out by talking about "the worst day of his life." He explained that in 1999 Hillsong's general manager told him about an allegation of sexual child abuse that was brought up against his father. Houston's goal of the candid talk was to help the sold out crowd learn to navigate and lead through crisis times.
Houston mentioned that prior to finding out that his father, Frank Houston was a pedophile, he was his hero. He spoke about when he confronted his dad and his dad admitted it.
Frank was stripped of his pastoral title and Houston maintained he then had to "deal with it as a senior pastor, as a father, and then as a son."
As a result of the stress the Australian pastor admitted the doctors diagnosed him with post dramatic stress. "Our world was exploding externally but at the same time I was spiraling downwards internally," he said. A few years ago it resulted in Houston having a panic attack although he was pastoring a flourishing church.
Houston said he was greatly encouraged when he told the heart breaking news to one of his sons because of the way he reacted. Houston told his middle son Ben that he did not want it to affect his faith and Ben responded, "'don't worry dad I've had my own revelation of Christ.'"
He revealed it was eventually found out his father was serial a pedophile. "I hate pedophilia," he declared.
The Royal Commission in Australia is now investigating Houston and Hillsong church for not taking the child sex abuse to the police. Just last week he spoke about how difficult it was for him to deal with the swarms of press and paparazzi surrounding him. "It was horrendous," he shared.
Houston's congregation greatly encouraged him after the rough week because Sunday's church attendance was even higher than normal.
Houston then gave bullet points to those in attendance on how to lead and navigate through difficult times.

During his bullet point breakdown the mega pastor spoke of other times he felt betrayed when Hillsong released the song "Healer" written under the false impression that the writer had cancer.
He also talked about a time in 1995 that he was feeling personal grief over the loss of a friendship. He explained although he is not a smoker nor condones smoking, someone sent him a cigar and one particular night he felt rebellious and smoked the entire cigar.
"Don't ever be tempted to cover up because it always comes back to you," he said.
After Houston spoke, New York pastor Carl Lentz moderated and asked the panel and selected audience some questions.
Judah Smith spoke about the death of his father and getting through, while Christine Caine spoke about her struggles with identity crisis because of negative words spoken over her life. "I'm so intense not for your sake but for my sake because I'm always one step away from going back to destructive behavior," she admitted.
Durso spoke about having anger towards God when his son was on his deathbed. He said God answered his anger with grace and healed his son?. Joel Houston talked about the pressures he faced when wrestling with other people's idea of what a pastor's kid should do.
Overall the "Talk Church" segment was powerful because of its relaxed setting and the transparency of those who shared. View pictures of the conference below:
