Heavyweight Champion, Ken Norton Dies at Age 70. Famous Boxer Who Broke Ali's Jaw

Ken Norton, former heavyweight champion, passed away yesterday in Las Vegas.  Norton, who grew majorly ill after having a series of strokes, was 70-years old and living in a hospice.  His death was confirmed by his son Ken Jr., an assistant coach with the N.F.L.'s Seattle Seahawks and a pro linebacker for 13 seasons.

For those of you who don't remember the heavyweight champ, here is a little history. Norton defeated Muhammad Ali and broke his jaw during his first non-title fight back in 1973. He faced Ali in the ring on two other occasions, but was defeated.

In 1978 Norton won the WBC Heavyweight title after Leon Spinks refused to fight Norton for a chance to win the belt, but just a few months later Norton lost the belt to Larry Holmes.

The art of boxing started back in the 60s when Norton was serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. Norton was a three-time heavyweight champ during his enlistment in the Corps.

Norton was also cast on the big screen, his most notable role was in the 1975 Hollywood film "Mandingo," in which he played the slave Mede, who is trained to fight by his owner.
