HBO 'Boardwalk Empire' Season 5 Spoilers: Final Eight Episodes, Synopsis

'Boardwalk Empire' is gearing up to close out the series as it has already aired its Season 5 premiere episode, entitled "Golden Days for Boys and Girls."

Spoilers about the final season of the popular HBO series can be found in the synopsis below:

"Season 5 opens in 1931 with Nucky in Cuba, where he presses a US senator on the likelihood of Prohibition's repeal and eyes a future business deal with a rum magnate. Meanwhile, Margaret witnesses a casualty of the Great Depression on Wall Street; Luciano makes a bold career move; Chalky catches a break to get out of a bad situation; and in a flashback to 1884, a young Nucky makes an impression on the Commodore."

According to Hitfix, Terence Winter says the 'Boardwalk Empire' production team talked about their decision to close the series in Season 5.

He said, "Somewhere toward the middle of season 4, Howard Korder and I looked at each other and I said I feel like we're inadvertently winding down Nucky's story. He has his eye on an exit and he's so desperate to get out of this business."

He went on to say, "The whole idea of trying to move his operation down to Florida and Cuba we seemed to be wrapping it up. It wasn't our intention to end it this quickly but it was certainly looking like that. The more we talked about it and the more we talked with HBO, we felt we were really getting towards the end here."

HBO's 'Boardwalk Empire' aired its first Season 5 episode on September 7, 2014. The next episode, entitled "The Good Listener", airs September 14, 2014.
