Halloween Tips and Tricks: How to Avoid an Unhealthy Halloween

Halloween is a great family holiday with lots of fun for the little ones. If you are planning on taking your kids out trick or treating tonight or tomorrow night, make sure you read these tips so you and your family have a fun and safe Halloween.

The first big tip is to make sure you and your kids go out on the town with a full stomach. Otherwise, it will be too easy to reach in the bag and have candy for dinner. Wendy Palmer from Children's Healthcare of Atlanta says, "Talking them in advance about not snacking makes it a lot easier. I know it's a crazy night with everything going on, but you should make it a huge priority that your kids eat dinner before you go out. Even a quick peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a piece of fruit. Kids are really in tune with their appetite and won't be as tempted to snack if they are full."

The second tip is to make sure you know where your child's loot bag is at all times. Make sure that your dogs don't get to the candy before your kids! Dr. Ron DeHaven from the American Veterinary Society says, "When kinds come home after a night of trick or treating and dump their bag of candy, be sure that your pets are safely away in another room away from your kid's loot."

Are you trick or treating with your kids this year? Be sure to follow these safety precautions and have a great Halloween!
