Gungor Shares Thoughts on Christians Placing the Bible Above Jesus; Stop 'Using the Bible as a Weapon' (PODCAST LINKS)

Gungor has been under fire for their comments concerning the Creation story, and the Flood not being literal translations of what actually happened. Michael took to Twitter to create dialogue and conversation about Jesus and the Bible and posted some of the in-depth talks on their Facebook.

"There is a trend in modern society, no more than a trend...a religion, an idolatry that elevates scripture above Jesus," Gungor wrote, "This 'bibliolatry', if you will, is rooted in a modern mindset that values reductionism over mystery. A reading of the Bible over Jesus."

These thoughts are a shortened version of a two part blog written by Gungor called, "I'm With you (Part 2)." In the blog he discusses how people in the church put more weight into what the Bible says, that it takes precedence over Jesus and following His teachings and message. Gungor feels Christ should be first in everything, and then the Bible is the supplementary, not the other way around.

"(One clue that your church might be tinged with bibliolatry:in your beliefs section of your website, do you find Jesus first or the Bible?) Bibliolaters claim (read my Twitter feed) that Jesus CANT be the foundation of our faith--how do we know about Jesus without the Bible?" he continued. "What they may fail to realize is that Christianity existed for hundreds of years before there even was a Bible as we know it."

"And what that Bible says is not, 'for God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Bible,'" he continued.

Gungor speaks on the Bible being the "cornerstone of our faith." He makes the point that Jesus is known as the Word of God, but the Bible is never given that title. He admits they love the Bible and believe it is "God breathed."

"But perhaps some Christians need to hammer the proverbial note to the doors of this idolatrous religion that says 'ENOUGH OF THIS!'" he wrote. "Enough calling people heretics or apostate for disagreeing with your reading of the Bible! Enough creating false dichotomies that force people to choose between scientific ignorance or love for and trust in Jesus."

He implores people to stop "using the Bible as a weapon" and to "trust Jesus."

Gungor further breaks down his thoughts on Creation and Evolution in a Liturgists podcast here. Read our article about Gungor's talk with the Bad Christian podcast.
