'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' Release Date: Sequel Premiere on July 28, 2017? Movie Already in the Works

During the recent International Comic-Con event, held in San Diego, California, Marvel announced that the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' sequel is slated to premiere on July 28 of 2017. Director James Gunn will reportedly be writing and directing the superhero movie follow up, however, it remains unclear if original Guardians co-writer Nicole Perlman will also be writing alongside Gunn for the sequel.

Gunn and 'Guardians of the Galaxy' lead actor Chris Pratt recently made the announcement for the sequel's release date through a mock video which the two sent from London.

The first film in the Marvel franchise was just recently released in theaters, and has done fairly well at the box office, raking in a whopping $37.8 million on Friday alone. According to reports, the film has great chances of surpassing the $92 million relatively soon.

Marvel Studios has been financing its own film projects since 2008, starting with the original 'Iron Man' movie, so 'Guardians of the Galaxy' rests as their tenth self-financed film to premiere thus far. The film is based on Marvel's original superhero comic book published under the same name in 1969.

During a recent interview, writer/director James Gunn has revealed that the sequel to the Guardians movie has already been in the works even before the first film was setup with a premiere date. Gunn also shared hints of what he has in mind for the movie's second installment, including an angle involving Peter Quill's family, particularly his father.

The latest Marvel film features stars Chris Pratt (Peter Quill), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Vin Diesel (voice of Groot), and Bradley Cooper (voice of Rocket).
