GTA 5 PC Beta News Email Fake? Hackers Target Unsuspecting Gamers with Faulty Promo Code

Grand Theft Auto 5 for PC has not been publicly announced by Rockstar Games, but that is not preventing online criminals from attacking on its potential consumers.

According to a Trend Micro report, an organization that specializes in online security, users are getting emails that offer entry into a fake GTA 5 PC beta test. The attached .ZIP file opens an application titled "Your promo code in app rockstargames.com," which really leads to a backdoor named BKDR_ANDROM.ATG.

Some users did not notice the email's terrible grammar and unprofessional which should make a user question the email's legitimacy. However, reportedly some people really were in a rush to download the fake GTA 5 PC Beta Email to take the time to inspect the email more closely. Here is a look at the sample spam email attached discovered by Trend Micro.

"At this time we don't have an indication of how many people it has caused problems for. Trend Micro is trying to spread awareness of this issue to help contain this problem," said Trend Micro to IGN.

Trend Micro also discovered a similar incident regarding a fake desktop version of the messaging app WhatsApp. Just like GTA 5, the desktop version of WhatsApp has not been confirmed as of yet, but it still got its own share of online victims.

Gamers and online users should always remain alert when it comes to spam emails. Also make sure to check credible and respectable news organizations and/or websites before clicking on anything that appears too good to be true. In addition, look for verification from first-party sources (for example: Rockstar Games).
