Goonies 2 Movie Release Date and Rumors: Steven Spielberg Searching for Fresh Director
The Goonies which was screened for the first time on June 7, 1985, almost 30 years ago, is rumored to have an upcoming sequel. News reports say that original film writer Chris Colombus and executive producer Steven Spielberg have been negotiating and looking for new writers and directors for Goonies 2.
Reports have been going around saying that Spielberg has concocted a new story for the film and is in the market for a new director to give him a shot in the industry. The movie is in its pre-production according to rumors and recently, director of the film Richard Donner stated, "If you call Goonies a comic book, we're doing a sequel," he told TMZ.
Cast member Sean Astin affirmed fans of the original in a statement, "It will happen. I'm 1000 percent certain there will be a sequel. I will bet my children on it." He told IGN. While the movie seems to confirmed by various actors and directors, there is yet to be an official statement.
Also, there are no official announcements stating whether the sequel will cast the original cast members or feature them in cameo roles. Although director Donner hopes that all of them could, he mentioned to IGN.
The story features a group of young teens from the "Goon Docks" neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon. As they attempt to save their homes from destruction, the young group discovers an old Spanish map that leads them to the treasure of a legendary 17th-century pirate.
The 1985 film was a success. It was listed as one of the top box office hits that year. With that in mind, the sequel is expected to exceed the original film and from the looks of it, the production will have to be careful to balance out all the elements of the film.
