Google OS News & Update: When Will Chrome Apps Be Phased Out?

Google is tweaking its OS once again, this time affecting third-party apps in Chrome.

This is not exactly news as this was already been announced months back. However, Google revealed that the apps in its browser, apart from Chrome extensions, will start to see some changes late this year.

By the second half of next year, the Web Store in Chrome will no longer show apps on Mac, Windows or Linux. These "hosted apps," which will lead you to other websites.

Finally, in 2018, the third-party apps will no longer be loaded on Chrome on Windows, Mac and Linux.

But the number of affected won't be that significant as only 1% of users actually use these hosted apps. And that's probably the reason why Google is changing the OS in the first place.

The news about the change in Google OS was shared in a blog post.

"All types of Chrome apps will remain supported and maintained on Chrome OS for the foreseeable future," Rahul Roy-Chowdhury, VP Product Management, said. "Additional enhancements to the Chrome apps platform will apply only to Chrome OS devices, including kiosks. Developers can continue to build Chrome apps (or Android apps) for Chrome OS."

However, developers can still make use of the new APIs to make apps and fill the vacuum that would surely be created by the tweak in Google OS Chrome. They can also utilize NW.js or Electron, and even the Chrome extension for the meantime.

For end users, however, they should know that the news about the Google OS will not in any way affect the themes and extensions in Chrome.
