Google Nexus 8 Release Date: Google I/O 2014 Comes and Goes, Still No Announcement

Google I/O 2014 came and went, but the company has yet to announce its alleged 8.9-inch tablet, codenamed "Flounder" and "Volantis, also dubbed Nexus 8. This is set to be Google's next new Android tablet following the Nexus 7, which is widely acknowledged as one of the best tablets around.

The rumor mill has been churning out speculation since the name Nexus 8 has been uncovered by German developers Florian Kiersch and Carsten Knobloch. The Nexus 8 has been the focus of many leaks lately with regards to its specs.

Android Police reports that it is being internally referred to as Nexus 9, but it could be released as the Nexus 8. Another report is saying that it will have an NVIDIA Logan 64-bit processor, 2GB of RAM, an 8 megapixel main camera, a 3 megapixel front-facing camera, 16 or 32GB of internal storage and it will weigh about 418g.

The report also claims that the new Nexus 8 will carry a price tag of $399 for the 16GB model and $499 for the 32GB.

A few weeks ago, Google allegedly made an allusion with regards to the tablet. The Nexus 8 surfaced on the main page of the I/O website, showing a user playing the Racing game on a smaller tablet believed to be the Nexus 8.

In the image, the device appears to have front-facing speakers, a feature which many Android tablets do not have. It also seemed to have curved edges that form into the top and bottom bezel, which could also be the new HTC Flyer Tablet.

The Nexus 8 will reportedly be announced on a dedicated event before the end of this year.
