Google Android Wear News: Apple to Allow iOS Compatibility on New Device?
Even as Google's latest Android Wear operating system is becoming increasingly popular, appearing on smartwatches like the Moto 360 and the upcoming LG G Watch R, the search engine giant has expressed its desire to make a device that will be compatible with Apple's iOS.
What's also intriguing is that Google is contemplating to develop an open-source operating system that is compatible with iOS. This was hinted by Jeff Chang, Product Manager (Android Wear).
In an interview with the Huffington Post UK, Chang explained that the larger user base of iOS is definitely quite a lucrative target for his team.
Chang said, "We always want as many users as possible to enjoy our experience, so in terms of enabling more people to use Android Wear we're very interested in making that happen."
The Google official, however, restricted his remarks, saying that as far as the iOS as well as the hardware is concerned, Apple holds all the keys. Chang also mentioned that it is likely Apple Inc. will not be willing to share this information with anyone.
He observed, "It's not always completely up to us, right?" and went on to say, "There are technical constraints, API constraints so we are trying really hard."
Meanwhile, a report by Techradar says that Apple, which is reputed for its "walled garden" approach, is occasionally willing to "play nice with rival software". Earlier in 2014, the Cupertino-headquartered tech titan granted permission to Microsoft for launching Office for iPad on its tablet range.
However, having introduced the HealthKit and especially the Apple Watch, it is very unlikely that Apple will agree to Google's idea of an Android Wear compatible with iOS. In fact, Apple has just entered a new market segment and it would not like to risk its fledgling business as well as share its consumer base with its rival.
