Global X Games to be held in Austin Text in May, 2014

Austin, Texas, has grabbed the coveted spot to replace long-time host Los Angeles for the Global X Games on May 15-18, 2014. This will be one of 6 stops for the Global X Games circuit for the next four years, and was announced by ESPN on Wednesday.

"First of all, Austin as a city has done a terrific job over the last several years embracing big events," Guglielmino said. "Music, obviously, is a big piece of that, and they have a very active community and city. The other piece of it was when we got on the ground in Austin and met Bobby [Epstein, COTA's chairman and founding partner] and his group and saw the facility, it felt right very quickly. They shared a vision in terms of growing out this event," said Scott Guglielmino, ESPN's senior vice president for the program and Global X.

Austin beat out Chicago, Detroit, and Charlotte to replace the L.A. host. Circuit of the Americas (COTA), will be the official venue for the games. It is a 1600 sports and entertaining venue that is a short 20 minute drive outside of downtown. It's only been open for one year, but has already hosted the Formula One race, and the Grand Prix, which drew in 260,000 fans.

"This is amazing! All of my life, I have wanted to go to the X Games, and now it's turning into a reality. This is absolutely HUGE for me, from both a fan and a career standpoint as I am currently majoring in public relations to pursue action sports PR and the fact that I'll now be able to attend the X Games and network is just incredible for me," said Austin Nettleton of Texas Tech University

The games will be bummed up by 2 months, due to the extreme heat in Austin. The bid for the other contending seats for North America will be announced this fall.
