Ghostbusters 3 Movie Release Date, Cast News: Sigourney Weaver Reveals Plot to Upcoming Film (VIDEOS)
In a new interview, Ghostbusters and Alien star Sigourney Weaver revealed what fans can expect to see in the long awaited sequel to popular science fiction movie franchise.
"I said, I have one condition. I want my son Oscar [from Ghostbusters 2] to be a Ghostbuster, and he said, 'We've already done that'," said Weaver to Vanity Fair to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the first Ghostbusters film that was released in US theaters in 1984.
Weaver played Dana Barrett in the first two installments of movies (1984 and 1989), her character was the love interest of Ghostbuster Dr. Peter Venkman (played by Caddyshack's Bill Murray).
It appears that Murray will not reprise his role as arguably the most popular character in the series. His longtime co-star Dan Aykroyd addressed Murray's non-involvement in the future film, "It's sad but we're passing it on to a new generation. Ghostbusters III can be a successful movie without Bill. My preference would be to have him involved but at this point he doesn't seem to be coming and we have to move on. It's time to make the third one," said Aykroyd to Metro in August 2012.
Murray explains why he might not reprise his role in the third film which will star his former co-stars Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver and Ernie Hudson, in addition to adding a younger cast of Ghostbusters.
"Oh, that I'm not in a rush to do the Ghostbusters movie? We made the first Ghostbusters - it was one of the great movies, one of the great entertainments of all time. Then we made a second one; it was okay, right? So what are we going to do? Are we going to rush to make a third one? It would be great if you could make one that was as good as the first one. It would probably be good if you could make one that was as good as the second one. But, you know, there was The Godfather. Then there was The Godfather II. And then there was The Godfather III. So if you want Godfather III ...," said Murray to Dazed Digital in March 2014.
Murray further expressed his thoughts on his reservations about making another sequel.
"Well, my friends. Man, do [my friends] want to do it? They kind of do. But someone with a lot more to gain than my friends wants to do it more than they want to do it. Right? And I understand, it's business. They want to refresh the franchise. The franchise is fantastic. But I find that you don't really lose by saying no in show business. If you say no, sometimes they come back with a better script. Or sometimes it just goes away. But I don't know. Are you thinking of going back to high school?," said Murray.
Sadly, Murray's co-star Harold Ramis died on February 24, 2014, therefore he will not be able to reprise his role as Dr. Egon Spengler in the future film.
Ghostbuster 3 release date is still in question because the film is expected to begin filming next year.
