'Ghostbusters 3' Movie Cast Rumors: Film Reboot to Feature Female Cast Starring Melissa McCarthy (VIDEO)

There are new reports that claim that the popular 'Ghostbusters' movie franchise will be rebooted and will feature female protagonists rumored to be led by 'Bridesmaids' actress Melissa McCarthy.

The film is reportedly directed by Paul Feig of 'Bridesmaids' and 'Freaks and Geeks' fame, according to numerous reports.

McCarthy will team up with Feig once again when she plays secret agent Susan Cooper in the upcoming 'Spy' film, which is expected to arrive in theaters on May 22, 2015 by 20th Century Fox.

The rumor linking Feig at the helm has not been confirmed or denied by Sony Pictures as of yet.

If the rumor is true, then the 51-year-old film director, writer, and actor would be replacing famed movie director Ivan Reitman, who had decided not direct the movie after the sudden death of his friend and colleague Harold Ramis (best known for playing the brilliant Egon Spengler in the first two Ghostbusters film in 1984 and 1989) earlier this year.

"It's unfortune, you know, Harold is not here. Harold was the glue...he was amazing. He was an icon. So you're going to get a GHOSTBUSTERS, but obviously it's going to be a GHOSTBUSTERS without Harold," said Ramis' longtime co-star Ernie Hudson (Winston Zeddemore) to Film Dumpster at the Niagara Falls Comic-Con in June, "It's going to be different. So it [part 3] has to be original and it has to be something that is worth all the 30 years of waiting."

Harold Ramis passed away on February 24, 2014 due to complications of autoimmune inflammatory vasculitis.

The 'Ghostbuster 3' film is expected to begin filming next year.
