Gamers Arrested For Cheating In Online Game: 3 Japanese Teenagers Charged With Obstruction of Business
Japan's online game company Nexon has had enough, and is pressing charges against three teenagers for cheating, also known as hacking, in their online multiplayer game, Sudden Attack.
One of Japan's largest newspapers, Yomiuri Online, reports that this is the first time gamers have had criminal liability charged against them in Japan for allegedly cheating in an online game. The three culprits had been using cheating programs to put other players at a severe disadvantage during the game's matches.
Obstruction of business and distribution of the cheats were allegedly charged to the teenagers, ages 17-18.
Usual methods for dealing with players of online games that break the terms of service, results in account suspension or a permanent ban. In this case, Nexon took it upon themselves to use the three cheaters as an example to deter any other players who've considered the same.
The game involved is called Sudden Attack, a first person shooting game which allows players to compete in online matches. Split into two teams, red (Tanzirilo Independence Force) and blue (United Great Force), players can join matches for game modes such as, Team Deathmatch, Hostage Rescue, and Heartbeat Mode.
While some feel that Nexon has stepped out of line in their pursuit of criminal charges against the cheaters, others think maybe this will help the fight against online video game hackers.
