'Game of Thrones' Season 3 Episode 9: "The Rains of Castamere" Review, Recap: "It's A Nice Day for a Red Wedding" [VIDEO]
Game of Thrones Season 3 spoilers!
Last Sunday night's Game of Thrones Episode 9: "The Rains of Castamere" was one of the most exciting 50 minutes of television this year.
In Season 2, Robb Stark, King of the North, betrayed his oath to marry Lord Walder Frey's daughter in exchange for resources and soldier to supplement his attack on King's Landing. Instead Robb fell in love with another.
But that's at the end of Episode 9. The show kicked off like Episode 8, with Arya and the Hound approaching the Twins. The Hound hopes to sneak into the city and sell the girl to the Stark family. Arya arrives in the city just after the slaughter, and just in time to see her brother's wolf killed in his outdoor cell. She knows something is terribly wrong, but no idea the extent of tragedy.
Jon Snow's true colors also shine, as he refuses to kill an innocent farmer, and is goaded into a fight with the Wildlings who never trusted him. Bran lended his warg abilities and possessed his wolf Summer to aid Jon Snow in his fight against the Wildlings.
Danaerys is still working on a way to sack Yunkai and absorb its army. Daario sneaks inside the city walls with Jorah and Grey Worm and takes down a couple waves of guards, securing access into the city. Maybe Daario is pure after all.
Then the show takes a complete left turn in the last 10 minutes. The Freys and Boltons betray Robb Stark and his men after a rousing night of drinking and feasting. Frey's gift to Talisa, was to have the pregnant wife repeatedly stabbed in the womb. A barrage of arrows falls on everyone in the room including Robb and Catelyn Stark. Catelyn captures Frey's wife and tries to save her son, sacrificing her own. To no avail Catelyn's throat is slit and the screen goes black.
Tune in Sunday for the Game of Thrones Season 3 finale at 9/8c on HBO.
