Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat Update Released on the Verizon Network
This week, Verizon Wireless finally rolled out the Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat update to its customers. It took quite long for the company to offer the latest operating system to its users and some users were becoming frustrated, but it seems Verizon has finally got its act together and rolled the update out.
Samsung actually launched the Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat update in January, but Verizon customers were still left waiting. However, after passing through all the various tests involved with any update, Verizon has finally released the update to its customer in May.
However, since the update is somewhat small, the users probably should not have waited so long to receive it.
While Sprint offered the same update to its users a long time back, even other mobile operators in the United States - AT&T, T-Mobile and Cellular, were quick to release it to their respective customers.
Still, the software is not available OTA, and, hence, users will require using Samsung KIES or Verizon's Software Upgrade Assistant to receive it. While the OTA version is expected to be available within days, it should take roughly 30 minutes for the users to download and install the update.
However, specific models of Galaxy S3 will not be receiving the Android 4.4 KitKat update.
According to SamMobile, the non-LTE Galaxy S3 model as well as the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini will not receive KitKat, as they only feature 1GB RAM, which will not be sufficient for the device to run all of Samsung's TouchWiz additions that accompany it.
Samsung issued a statement on the matter: "In order to facilitate an effective upgrade on the Google platform, various hardware performances such as the memory (RAM, ROM, etc.), multi-tasking capabilities, and display must meet certain technical expectations."
The company further stated, "The Galaxy S3 and S3 mini 3G versions come equipped with 1GB RAM, which does not allow them to effectively support the platform upgrade. Samsung has decided not to roll-out the KitKat upgrade to (them)."
While these devices will not receive the update, the Galaxy S3 LTE model will get KitKat sometime in the near future, as it packs the 2GB of RAM which is enough to allow it to run the update efficiently.
